Bank Refund Scam cases are rising across the UK, especially targeting elderly individuals with fake promises of money refunds. David, a 68-year-old retired teacher living in Birmingham, was having breakfast one morning when his landline phone rang. The caller introduced herself as “Julie from your bank’s refund team.” She said David was eligible to receive £3,200 due to excessive bank charges from the previous year. David believed her — after all, who wouldn’t want extra money from the bank?

But after a while, the real game started. Julie said that to transfer the refund, David has to pay a £150 processing fee. She insisted that David transfer the money immediately and told him she would stay on the call until he did.

David transferred the money. After some hours, he felt something was off, and he called his real bank and got a reply from them – “Sir, we did not call you regarding of bank refund. It looks like you got scammed”. 

What is a Bank Refund Scam?

The Bank Refund Scam is a method used to defraud people, in which a scammer calls unsuspecting individuals and claims that they need to retrieve money from their bank account. They usually say that they are getting this money because of the old bank charges, PPI(Payment Protection Insurance), or because of a bank mistake.

But scammers ask for a processing fee or a release charge. Once the victim sends the money, the scammers vanish—no refund ever arrives.

How does the scam work?

• First of all, they get a call, email, or message in which they say that they will be getting a refund.
• Then they ask for some private details (like name, address, bank name – which they might already know.
• In the next step, they ask for a small amount of fee.
• And once you transfer the money, the scammer disappears with the money.

In some cases, some victims don’t even realise they’ve been scammed until days later.

Why does this fraud seem so convincing?

The dangerous part of the” bank refund scam” is that it comes with good news – like you are about to receive extra money. Many people remember the real cases of PPI refund, and fraudsters take advantage of that.

Sometimes they already knew the name, bank details, and old address, which makes these calls look genuine.

Which people are targeted?

Mostly fraudsters target old citizens, or people who have less technical knowledge, or people who live alone. But sometimes, people who are educated and who have great internet knowledge also fall for these scams.

How to avoid this fraud?

• Never send money for a refund. Genuine banks never ask for money in exchange for a refund.
• Always verify by calling the official number of the bank.
• Never share your bank details on any call or email.
• Check the number or email on Google. Many times, people have already reported.
• Use call blocker apps on your phone.

• Contact your bank immediately. They can block your transaction.

• Alert others. The more people know about this, the harder it will be for scammers.
